Hughes Subsea enhances UXO capabilities

Hughes Subsea Services has announced that it has been granted an Explosives License from the HSE and has become a company member of the Insititute of Explosive Engineers (IExpE)

These developments will allow Hughes to expand and diversify the UXO services they offer to their clients primarily from within the offshore renewables sector. Hughes Subsea Managing Director Ian Hughes comments  "the granting of an Explosives Licence and IExpE Company Membership is a significant expansion to our UXO capabilities, which has been driven by the demand from our growing client base for this specific service offering. It will allow us to better serve our clients ' needs, by providing a complete UXO service package, whether the requirement is inshore, nearshore or offshore"

The IExpE is a membership organisation promoting the highest standards of excellence in the explosives industry.  With a focus on technical excellence, personal development and knowledge sharing, IExpE distinguishes itself through its commitment to professional development. Ian continues, "We are delighted to become a member of the IExpE, it gives us access to an organisation that has built up over almost 50 years of specialist knowledge.  It is a great resource which will enable us to ensure we provide the best possible advice and service to our clients."

The company also aims to expand its UXO services through further recruitment. Hughes Subsea Services has recently welcomed EOD Project Manager Matt Bryers IExpE, who brings over 13 years of specialist UXO experience serving in the Royal Navy. Matt comments, "I'm excited to join Hughes Subsea Services on their journey of growth and development. Their first-class capabilities combined with the experience, professionalism and dedication of the team make this a great place to work."

With its Explosives Licence now in place, the company is now able to undertake underwater UXO clearance work to further support clients in their operations. Using a combination of both diving and ROV techniques, Hughes capability spans from survey and investigation through to disposal and relocation. "Our own Explosive Licence to acquire and keep explosive stores allows us to provide our clients with a greater level of flexibility, ensuring the project critical path remains unaffected," Matt added.

Hughes Subsea Services' expanded capabilities include UXO search and identification, UXO disposal and relocation, as well as Free From Explosive (FFE) and As Low As Reasonably (ALARP) Certification Services.
